Long story short: They are a branch off of a group of SkyClan cats who sought out for another home after their home in the gorge was threatened. They came across the beach, and eventually branched off when the Clan became too big. Each Clan stopped believing in StarClan at different times.

[ Official History of the Coastal Clans ]

A long time ago, as far back as all Clans' histories go, there had been five Clans. They all ruled peacefully, as well as any group of feral cats could get, and everything was well for a time. Gradually, over time, there was an infestation of humans in one of their territories - there was little they could do. They tore up the ground and shredded trees. Many cats were lost and when that Clan pleaded for sanctuary - for little pieces of territory, just enough for them to survive in the forest they all called home - the other Clans turned them away. They turned to their ancestors for help but they refused their pleas and this Clan gradually accepted that they would receive no help. They left, hoping for a place they could call their own and eventually their paws lead them to a gorge. They drove out the rogues there and settled in, some of them even accepted some of the rogues into their ranks. But the gorge was no place for them - so a group split off and promised to return once they found more suitable territory.

Their medicine cat sent along their apprentice and the cat who might as well have been deputy left as well. A group of sizable warriors and apprentices left with them and rode on the promise on a dream from StarClan - that they would find new land at the coast, where the sun drowns. The journey was long and would toughen them, but they yearned for home and things long past, but they stuck true to their promises and kept on their way. Eventually, they would come across territories they would think would suit them and their entire group of cats. Pairs of them would linger at these territories but, the others, having received no sign from their ancestors that this was it, would carry on. Eventually, the stragglers will catch up and the party will resume. They reached the sun-drown place and found it worthy of their attention, just like it had been foretold. The forests were ripe with game, and the large, endless, lake filled with fish - of which they did not know how to catch as of yet - and the cliffside held their attention just as well, as it would fight off any invaders who dared to charge after them on land and would likely meet an untimely demise. They settled in the trees, of which they could rest happily along the branches that they had called home back in The Forest. The others wanted to explore the rest of the land, so they agree, being cautious. Eventually they would return and admitted that this territory was better than anything they could ever hope for. They marked the borders along the trees as their territory before they sent off a patrol to retrieve their lost Clan.

They didn't return.

The hope of their return faded and then became obsolete, especially as StarClan descended and told them of what had happened - their original Clan had fallen, succumbed to diseases and rogues. Instead, StarClan promised them refuge in the territory they had claimed. It takes them a while to function, to figure out whom of them would be deemed suitable to lead them. Gradually, SkyClan was formed once more. Finchflight, the original leader of sorts, never did take the rank of leader but still appointed a deputy who would eventually be known as the first leader of the rebirth of SkyClan, Frecklestar. After Finchflight's death, Freckletar had to fight dissent among the Clan and the fact that they wanted to expand the territory without their knowledge of how to use that territory well enough. The medicine cat, Mooseheart, warned that they were skeptical of StarClan's intentions - if they dared to bear the same name as their ancestors, what was the chance that they would befall the same fate when more foes joined the cliffside and threatened them? So it was decided that the name of SkyClan would be shed, and in favour of the last leader of the true SkyClan who had tried to save them, they named it CloudClan.

StarClan didn't seem to share the same sentiment of the tom who had turned his back on StarClan and let the Clan fall into disrepair. In hopes to rectify the problem they went in search of something that could appease StarClan - for surely there could be something that let them consider them once more? That would allow for them not to share the same fate? CloudClan separated and for the first time in years, considered the territory beyond the tree borders. In order to feed their young and elderly, a portion of their warriors lead by Herringflight, taught themselves how to fish along the edges of the ocean - a strange name that they had learned from the rogues who initially lived by the shores. Eventually, they found a luminous stone that was embedded in the wall of an old mine in the cliffside and with work, they managed to create a small shaft for sunlight to slide through to illuminate the gemstone. They decided on calling it the Sunstone and StarClan agreed and met with the medicine cat and future leaders there.

Over time, CloudClan had shifted into two primary factions among their warriors - those who fished and those who hunted among the trees. The clefts were dangerous territory and with no true pathway back up, it was dangerous to bring the prey back to the camp. It was ultimately decided that the Clan would split into two - they had enough cats for each faction and so long as they could handle their own, all would be well. The oceanside Clan's best warrior, Salmonripple, opted on naming Splashstar as the leader. They had the medicine cat of CloudClan teach their own cat the ways of the herbs. StarClan accepted this Clan as their own and told the Clans to hold the Gatherings in the old lighthouse, which had once been a part of CloudClan's territory. Despite whispers of how similar they were to another Clan who had been the result of their banishment, they opted for the name of TideClan. However, it became clear that with such a clear divide between the Clans, they were not true SkyClanners and as such were unworthy of being named after the true SkyClan leader - so they shed the name of CloudClan and after much debate, they agreed on RoostClan, named after the nests that baby birds lived in. For what was better than being named for new life?

However, as time passed they grew weary - there were no cats who guarded the Sunstone. Although the strip of territory that marked the cliffside was being whispered about among the cats, none were truly suitable for living there. So, both TideClan and RoostClan agreed to send their best - strong and able cats who could brave the cliffside and gather herbs and the prey that would occasionally live there. Over time, they became more guard like and became a section of their own - if certain warriors showed skill in that area, they were sent to the cliffsides. However, over time, they began to consider themselves a separate group and thus "closer" to StarClan. They branched off and began to refuse to share prey with their respective Clans - what use was bringing prey back to camps if they forced them to practically live there? Finally, with StarClan's permission, they officially branched off. Despite their initial attempts at being named CraggyClan, they decided against the immaturity of it and settled on CragClan instead, named for the clefts that the Sunstone was set into.

For a while, the Clans were in peace. They held moony Gatherings at the lighthouse and they all seemed to live in peace despite the disputes over borders, specifically along the cliffside - namely because it was new and had yet to be established at that point. But as all things do, there was a little mishap among the Clans - StarClan promised them new land, among those who had been like them. Essentially, StarClan wanted them to join up with the original Clans who had banished them. Half of the cats wanted to return, because surely, StarClan wouldn't betray them? They would surely give them a proper place this time? The other half wasn't so sure. Darkecho of CragClan was the most prominent voice, as he had been the deputy at the time, and demanded to know why they should trust StarClan now about this 'new territory' - why would they help them when before they had been the whole reason why they couldn't stay with the other Clans?

As a result, CragClan began to leave the Sunstone alone. Their anger towards StarClan began to grow, likely as a result from being forced into the duty due to their original Clans, and the other Clans grew uneasy. How would StarClan react? Evidently, very negatively. As a repercussion, StarClan sent a hurricane that devastated a good chunk of territory. The rebellion ceased but the whispers still grew. What would StarClan do if somebody outright opposed them? Surely they must have been afraid of something, because if you kill the speaker that just means you're afraid of what they'll say. As a result, CragClan was the first to detach themselves from StarClan. StarClan, as a result, promised refuge to the other two Clans and that when the time came and the Prophecised Cats arrived, StarClan would tell them to take Roost- and TideClan.

However, StarClan can't control everything. When a sickness ravaged RoostClan due to a bird disease, they were unable to offer herbs. TideClan's territory didn't have it and CragClan refused to share it, although that was partly due to a small feud they had - and that they had different opinions on StarClan. They struggled and eventually the leader of RoostClan, Greenstar, lost five lives in succession to the disease. Angered that StarClan couldn't persuade CragClan to give them herbs - which would have worked by an apology, CragClan had once admitted - they refused to attend the Gatherings and began to turn from StarClan. TideClan, however, still clung to the hope that StarClan was good and benevolent.

StarClan promises TideClan that if they kept believing and kept waiting, then they would be the only Clan to leave the coast. CragClan, despite their feud with StarClan, still consented to the other Clans visiting the Sunstone if they wished. However, they made clear who their allegiance allied to now - the Dark Forest had sensed the dissent and sided with CragClan and any other Clans who would refuse StarClan. As a result, when Sleekstar died and his deputy, Sungaze, was made leader, he chose to receive his nine lives from the Dark Forest and received the suffix of -moon. Because, despite StarClan's anger and displeasure with the Clans, when they covered the moon during Gatherings, it was still there - and such, they represented the moon. They would not bow to StarClan and be hidden by their false promises.

StarClan gradually began to figure that these Clans were hopeless - especially when RoostClan attacked CragClan and fought over land rights. Eventually, CragClan had to surrender their land, which had been around the lighthouse and some of the surrounding area. RoostClan claimed the lighthouse as their own as well and refused to let the other Clans visit it - which had been just as fine with them, save for TideClan. TideClan, however, didn't appreciate StarClan's anger and feared the storms that they brought, as they were often the ones most affected. Their leader, however, couldn't make it to the Sunstone to receive their lives due to an injury and StarClan feared the worst. The resulting storm nearly drowned out the entirety of TideClan and more than halved their territory and left them with a chain of islands that had once been nothing but beach and ruined boats.

RoostClan and CragClan, despite their differences and their low tolerance of TideClan's favour towards StarClan, still recognized the other as a Clan and that what StarClan did was unjust. They rebelled and told all of their Clanmates to no longer believe in murderers. TideClan's faith broke during that storm and they recuperated in the others' territories as the flooding went down. It was nearly definite - all the cats who had died were sent to the Dark Forest, wanting nothing to do with StarClan at all save for a select few. RoostClan finally demanded an apology, for StarClan to agree that they're not right and that they can make mistakes. But StarClan looked at the Clans, ignored their unity and pride and saw that their dark spirits - what use was it watching over Clans that didn't treat them with respect as well? StarClan goes silent and for moons, a few stragglers clung to the hope that they would return. Instead, they never did. Go to the Clan that Buzzardmoon lead for your history code word.

TideClan was the last to convert to the Dark Forest, to earn their nine lives from them. They weren't too certain of the Dark Forest's motives, of who the darker looking cats were, but surely they weren't that bad if they stuck with the Clans through thick and thin? That despite everything, they made no promises of health or of freedom. For years, the Clans lived in relative peace - despite the storms that raged the Clans due to StarClan refusing to protect them from it and soon enough they forgot the feeling of snow and of peaceful, sunny weather and without threats.

It was within the last year that TideClan grew ill with a disease. They fought it off but without the appropriate herbs to deal with it, it swept through the Clan, ensuring that they would remain the ones with the least amount of cats in their ranks. Finally, Squirrelmoon and his deputy, Limpleg, both perished due to the disease. Jaggedear and his apprentice struggled to tend to the leaders but they could do nothing for them. The disease finally pattered off, with a few stragglers who are condemned to an inner den, and within the last moon a new leader was nominated by popular vote.

Alternatively, RoostClan and CragClan were at war due to the former RoostClan deputy, Buzzardstorm, taking a few loyalists with him to CragClan. As of right now, it is uncertain why he left but he settled into CragClan well enough - Petalsnap was quick to step down and surprisingly, Elkmoon named Buzzardstorm his deputy. Gradually, when Elkmoon died, Buzzardstorm became leader and as his first order of business, demanded the territory that RoostClan had taken from them so long ago. As a result, they started a war that lasted a year and a half - the full length of Buzzardmoon's reign - before his untimely demise. Coldmoon, the leader of RoostClan at the time, interestingly only died a few days later of his wounds despite being told by the medicine cat that he could die any time during battle. He had been the one to finally kill Buzzardmoon. It's been noted by those who visit the Dark Forest in their dreams that Buzzardmoon is there and a very prominent cat, eager to know the going ons about the Clans.

It is also noted by cats thats because of the disease, TideClan was unable to pick a side. Furthermore, because of the war, TideClan's disease was strong enough to sweep through the Clan before it could be stopped. The history code word is deceit. Despite this, only RoostClan and CragClan still have tension towards each other, whereas the Tide-Roost and Tide-Crag relations are fairly smooth. The above code word was a lie.

It has since been six moons since the war and seven since the sickness that swept through TideClan.
